REVIEWING the 2013 Constitution is essential for genuine electoral reform in Fiji, says National Federation Party (NFP) assistant general secretary, Bimal Prasad Chaudhry.Speaking during the Fiji Law Reform Commission’s (FLRC) public consultation in Navua last week, he said meaningful reform would be limited unless the Constitution itself was revised.“The Constitution review, which is also outside your jurisdiction, but I feel prudent to mention here, that the intent of this electoral law reform is only possible if we have a Constitution that allows these reforms,” Mr Chaudhry said.

Mr Chaudhry said the structure and design of the 2013 Constitution appeared to be intended for permanence, describing it as a document “made never to be changed”.“We should also remember how this Constitution was placed, imposed upon us, what are its downfalls or shortfalls.“Why there is an urgent need to review this Constitution to pave the way forward.
