A proposed hotel in Riddings Estate has been withdrawn - meanwhile, six homes are proposed in New Holland and the local NHS has made another application linked to sustainability plans for Scunthorpe General Hospital.

Controversial plans for a hotel in Scunthorpe have been withdrawn. An 18-bed hotel was proposed in Manby Road , part of the Riddings Estate in Brumby Ward. The property proposed for conversion used to be a home for vulnerable people.

This closed three years ago and it has been empty since. The hotel proposal, which involved en-suites but no kitchen facilities, drew a strong negative reaction from local residents, with clientele, parking and traffic, and the hotel's location all featuring in objections. It was withdrawn this week by the applicant.

Read on below for more about the objections to the withdrawn hotel, six homes in New Holland and other latest planning developments in North Lincolnshire Counci l area. Hotel withdrawal The proposed hotel would have provided short-term accommodation to visitors and workers, according to a planning document. This also asserted, "the development will have no impact on the neighbouring properties.

" Plenty did not share this view. Before its withdrawal, there were 174 comments on the application, overwhelmingly opposed. A public petition was also submitted with 80 local residents' signatures.

This emphasised the unsuitability of the hotel's potential location, in "an unashamedly traditional working-class residential housing estate", and the potential noise and disturbances from having a hotel in the area. Many objector comments reacted with bafflement at proposing a hotel in the Riddings Estate. "What clientele are they seeking, for the middle of a council housing estate!?" asked one.

Traffic and parking concerns also featured - the hotel proposal included 19 car parking spaces. "Most days the road is already a slalom before further traffic is introduced," another objector commented. It would act as an extension of the existing facility, ensuring the separation of children and adult teaching areas, but also provide for an outreach food bank and kitchen. There would also be a washroom and toilets, and a multi-purpose hall. The mosque has been running since 1984.

One individual commented: "I support this action, I am Scunthorpe born and bred and love the diversity of the town." They added: "I would go as far as to say let them pull the old shops down and have a purpose built building." There have also been a few objections, focused primarily on parking.

"We have no parking available as it is with cars blocking the pavements when the Mosque is in use," one resident commented. New Holland six homes proposal Outline permission is sought to build six homes on land north of Peploe Lane, New Holland . Because of only initial permission being sought, the number of bedrooms and design of the homes is not specified.

New Holland Parish Council has objected, largely over flooding and drainage concerns. It has requested a closer look on these issues and a site visit by North Lincolnshire Council's planning committee. Because of the parish council's objection, it will have to be decided by the committee.

So far, one resident has expressed support, stating: "It's only a few properties not a huge builder and a new housing estate so why not." One has also objected, and mentioned in their objection that there have been several cat deaths locally "due to the manner of driving and heavy traffic". It follows on from NLAG being awarded last month £2.4m from the Great British Energy Local Power Plan to invest in solar projects at Scunthorpe and Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby, sites.

Just over £1m of this was allocated to complement ongoing sustainability projects at Scunthorpe General Hospital and are expected to save an extra £120,000 a year. Sustainability improvements planned include extra roof-mounted solar panels, solar carports within car parks, and insulation of flat roofs.
