Real stunts, real danger: Director Sejal Shah on Nawazuddin’s daring performance in Costao Director Sejal Shah tells Zoom, “When it came to action, we wanted to do everything for real. We had a fantastic team, and I was fortunate to work with actors who were committed to performing their own stunts. Our goal was to make the audience feel a sense of real danger and provide the fight sequences with the kind of grit and weight that you rarely see on screen.
For example, Nawaz trained for weeks in boxing and sprinting. I’m lucky to have had him on board!” The film also features a few intense scenes that required Nawazuddin to push his limits. Sejal adds, “Nawaz always took on tough scenes with the most energy.
There’s a moment in the film where he has to dive into a lake...
but the lake had crocodiles! Nawaz insisted on doing it for real, even though he isn’t a great swimmer. He did it with full conviction. There’s also a chase sequence on a bike, where Nawaz did all the stunts himself.
He later told me that during the scene, his bike brakes failed!” As a director, Sejal Shah found immense creative satisfaction in telling the story of Costao Fernandes, whose life story is both extraordinary and deeply personal. “The most fulfilling aspect was getting Costao Fernandes' story out into the world. I was especially relieved when Costao watched the movie for the first time and had tears in his eyes.
It was important to me that the movie stayed true to the real Costao—he demands truth, honesty, and integrity in everything he does. Honestly, I was really nervous when he was watching it, but I’m glad we stayed true to his story," Sejal signs off.
