The Dallas Cowboys touched on nearly every area of its roster this offseason, adding help in key areas including the offensive line, cornerback, running back, and linebacker. While the front office seems satisfied with the newly added product on the field, the wide receiver group remains a lingering issue for a team that once fielded one of the deepest corps at the beginning of the decade. After going through free agency and the draft with just one addition to the passing game, veteran WR Parris Campbell on a one-year deal, the need to another quality pass catcher remains arguaby the team's biggest need with training camp three months away.
According to Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram there is “building interest” in the Cowboys reuniting with former Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper. Now that the comp window has closed for 2025, Dallas can sign any player for any amount and it will not impact their 2026 comp pick allocations. Cooper, 30, spent last season playing for the Cleveland Browns before being dealt to the Buffalo Bills last October.
He ended the 2024 season with 44 receptions for 547 yards and four touchdowns. Before his time with the Browns, who traded for him in 2022, Cooper was catching touchdowns and making highlight reel plays for the Cowboys, who acquired him via trade with the then-Oakland Raiders, who made him the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.During his time in Dallas, Cooper cemented himself as the team's No.
1 receiver, posting 292 receptions for 3,893 yards and 27 touchdowns over four and a half seasons. The former Alabama standout earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 2018 and 2019 and notched consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns in 2019 and 2020. However, a dip in production during the 2021 season, combined with the weight of his five-year, $100 million contract signed in 2020, left owner Jerry Jones frustrated, especially after Dallas' disappointing 23-17 Wild Card playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, where Cooper, despite finding the end zone managed just six catches for 64 yards.
Should Dallas opt to reunite with the veteran WR, the move would give quarterback Dak Prescott, who is returning from a season-ending hamstring injury, another reliable option opposite All-Pro WR CeeDee Lamb, who played his first two seasons as the No. 2 option alongside Cooper.Follow Cowboys Wire on Facebook to join in on the conversation with fellow fans! This article originally appeared on Cowboys Wire: Cowboys gave this WR a $100M deal, let him walk and now want him back.
