Ludhiana: The alarming condition of city roads riddled with deep potholes — responsible for several accidents — has drawn the attention of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC). Acting on a complaint filed by activist Rohit Sabharwal, the commission has sought a detailed report from the municipal corporation commissioner. The matter is scheduled for the next hearing on July 10.
Sabharwal, in his complaint, stated that the officials of the municipal corporation, Ludhiana, have not been filling the potholes on Ludhiana roads. It further mentioned that the potholes have been responsible for many accidents in the city, endangering the lives of the common masses. It stated that in an incident near Jagraon Bridge, an advocate lost his life.
The accident occured on the pothole-riiden road. The complainant prayed for appropriate action to be taken by the commission. The commission, therefore, took cognisance of the complaint and directed that the matter be put before the Ludhiana municipal corporation commissioner, who may look into the same and submit his report one week before the next date of hearing.
Meanwhile, the MC officials claimed that earlier, due to weather conditions, they were unable to do essential patchwork in the city. However, they stated that the work had now started, and very shortly, they will cover the entire city. Notably, the issue of the poor condition of roads is not a new problem, as residents face a similar situation after every change in weather conditions.
The civic body allocates a large amount for road construction and repair works in its annual budget, but it has failed to ensure the quality of the material used at the time of construction, resulting in roads getting damaged early, residents claim..
