Gurgaon: Commuters in Udyog Vihar face daily challenges navigating through broken roads, dust and uneven surfaces. The industrial hub's internal roads, particularly from phases 1 to 5, are riddled with deep potholes, affecting thousands of office-goers and factory workers. Heavy truck movement has exacerbated the damage, raising concerns about worsening conditions during the coming monsoon, yet repair work has not been carried out.
"It is impossible to drive here without damaging the car. The roads were bad last year too, but now they are non-motorable," said Ashwini Maurya, who works as a supervisor in a textile company in Phase 2. Apoorv Agrawal, who works in Phase 4, said, "I travel from Sector 30 every day, and the moment I enter Udyog Vihar, the bumpy ride starts.
Vehicles slow down as they try to evade potholes. Some of the streets are not even properly lit. As a result, it becomes difficult to see the potholes, especially at night.
" Industrialists said that repeated assurances from authorities to address the issue have not resulted in concrete action. Udyog Vihar is home to over 2,500 factories and office complexes, including units from the IT & ITeS, textile, automobile and pharmaceutical sectors across five phases. Basic infrastructure has not been prioritised, they said Parveen Yadav, president of the Gurgaon Udyog Association, said they have been raising the issue for the last two years.
"Udyog Vihar contributes substantial revenue to the govt., yet essential infrastructure like roads is missing. We have raised this concern several times, but only patchwork repairs are carried out.
Some roads are beyond patchwork repair and need recarpeting. Authorities need to take up the issue urgently, but no compromise should be made on quality," he said. An official from the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) said the matter is being addressed.
"We initiated the tendering process last year but got delayed due to the imposition of the model code of conduct. Now, the tendering process for recarpeting of roads from phases 1 to 5 has been completed. We are in the final stages of allotting the work, and work is expected to start soon," said Arun Garg, deputy general manager of HSIIDC.
