Officers investigating a report of poaching in a village in Devon found two deer which had been killed by a speeding vehicle. This morning (Sunday, April 23), officers from Ivybridge and Rural Police made the discovery in Wotter, a village north of Dartmoor Zoo. On arrival, officers found two deer on the road, one of which was lying on a grassy bank just off the stretch of tarmac.
On closer inspection, officers saw that both deer were killed due to a collision with a vehicle. The deer were located a short distance away from a sign warning drivers of livestock in the area. The police force asked drivers to lower their speed slightly in order to avoid these collisions.
Ivybridge and Rural Police said: "This morning we went up to Wotter to a report of possible deer poaching. Closer investigation has revealed that both deer have been killed in a collision with a vehicle. "If people would just take five or ten miles an hour off in that area these collisions could be avoided.
Cruel irony the deer is within 50 yards of a 'LIVESTOCK' warning sign." The reaction to the Facebook post was mixed. One commenter said: "It's heartbreaking.
.. it's horrible when this happens.
I always drop my speed going over the moors, better to slow down." But another person said: "I've hit a deer at 30 miles an hour on this road. They run out and it's unavoidable.
"Twice in eight days this happened. They did both get up and run off seemingly uninjured but the collisions were unavoidable." DevonLive is now on WhatsApp and we want you to join us.
