Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has criticized the recent wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying they are driven by fear and personal interests rather than any genuine concern for public service or ideological conviction. Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television on Tuesday, Dalung reacted to the high-profile defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, whose switch to the APC effectively collapsed the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure into the ruling party. While Governor Oborevwori defended his defection as being in the best interest of Delta State, Dalung disagreed, suggesting that many of these political moves are more about avoiding scrutiny than serving the people.
“The wave of defections—or rather, the gale of repositioning by political elites—is more about survival, protection, and evasion of prosecution,” Dalung said. “Serious observers of Nigerian politics know this has nothing to do with ideology or service.” He further argued that the legitimacy of such decisions should ultimately lie with the electorate, not with the politicians themselves.
“Let the people decide if these moves are in their interest. Politicians should not continue to insult the intelligence of Nigerians by pretending every defection is for the public good,” he added. Dalung’s remarks come amid growing public skepticism over the flurry of defections ahead of the 2027 general elections, as many opposition figures align themselves with the APC under what critics describe as political convenience and self-preservation.
