An official reportedly said the corridor’s alignment will be finalised after the DPR is ready. Tendering will start soon, as decongesting traffic is now a key priority The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has initiated the construction of an elevated corridor from Vasant Kunj’s Nelson Mandela Marg to Gurugram-Faridabad Road, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) tasked with the development. The detailed project report (DPR) for this venture is currently being prepared.

This elevated road aims to alleviate traffic on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway (NH-8) and facilitate easier access to the airport. Spanning approximately 25 to 30 kilometres, the corridor will feature tunnels and underpasses at various points. Previously, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) had proposed an elevated road from INA to Mahipalpur bypass, but the plan did not materialise.

The central government, along with the Delhi Government, has now entrusted NHAI with the responsibility of completing this project. Commuters from East and South Delhi via Barapullah flyover will find their journey to the airport simplified with this new corridor. NHAI also intends to construct a tunnel linking Nelson Mandela Marg to the Shiv Murti Interchange.

An NHAI official told the Times of India that once the DPR is completed, the corridor’s alignment will be established. The tendering process will commence soon, as addressing the traffic congestion has become a priority. Another project official indicated that the elevated road will offer a direct route for airport and Gurugram-bound passengers, reducing traffic on the ring road and the stretch of NH-8 from Dhaula Kuan to Gurugram.

Experts warn that any further delays could lead to severe traffic jams on the ring road. They recommend considering tunnel options to avoid land acquisition issues and traffic disruption on busy roads. Initially, the estimated cost for the elevated road from INA to Mahipalpur bypass was Rs 4,500 crore.

With the project’s expansion, costs are expected to rise further..
