The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Professor Samuel Asagba, has revealed that the institution spends a staggering N720 million each year on electricity-related costs.Speaking during the university’s 17th Convocation Press Conference held on campus on Wednesday, Professor Asagba detailed the extent of the expenditure, explaining that DELSU pays approximately N60 million monthly for electricity and an additional N50 million for diesel to run its generators. This brings the total monthly cost to around N110 million.

“This is a serious concern that we must tackle,” he said, underlining his administration’s determination to implement more sustainable and cost-effective power solutions. He disclosed that the university is exploring alternative energy sources, particularly solar and hydropower, in collaboration with private sector investors.Alongside plans for energy reform, Professor Asagba outlined a series of ongoing and future development projects.



These include the installation of a centralised water supply system for Site Three, construction of internal roads, and strict compliance with the university’s original master plan.He identified funding as the university’s most pressing challenge and stressed the urgent need to increase Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). In response, he said, DELSU Investment Ltd.

would undergo a full restructuring, while the university’s printing press would be transformed into a fully operational publishing house.Further plans include expanding the Centre for Open and Distance Learning and raising undergraduate intake for high-demand academic programmes.To drive these initiatives, DELSU will actively pursue partnerships with both local and international investors through Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements.

According to the Vice Chancellor, these partnerships will play a vital role in delivering the university’s broader development agenda.Professor Asagba also restated DELSU’s ongoing commitment to staff welfare, the enhancement of its ICT infrastructure, global academic collaborations, and improving the job-readiness of its graduates.As part of its community engagement strategy, the university will also support local entrepreneurs and small-scale businesses in Abraka, reinforcing its role in regional development and corporate social responsibility.
