Devils ’ winger Timo Meier, in an attempt to cut-off a pass in the crease, ended up trucking Carolina goalie Frederik Andersen . Andersen fell flat back into the net, and play was stopped so a trainer could tend to the veteran goalie. Not long after, he left Game 4 during the second period with an undisclosed injury.
He still earned the win since the Hurricanes clobbered the Devils 5-2 at Prudential Center on Sunday , and they were leading 3-1 at the time. Carolina took a 3-1 lead in the series. Initially, Meier was given a five-minute major penalty for goalie interference, but upon review, it was reversed since the contact was deemed incidental.
“(Carolina forward Andrei) Svechnikov pushed me in,” Meier said. “Obviously no intent there. I hope he’s not injured too bad.
But nothing on my side I could have done.” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said Andersen, their starter for each game this series, would be evaluated on Monday before Game 5 on Tuesday in Raleigh. Backup Pyotr Kochetkov saved 14 of 15 shots in relief.
Brind’Amour wanted the oh-so controversial goalie interference rule be interpreted in a different way. Since Meier claims Svechnikov pushed him in, according to the NHL’s rulebook , Meier would have had to try to get out of Andersen’s way. There must be an effort by the attacking player to avoid making contact with the goaltender.
If the player does not make an effort to avoid contact with the goaltender, then they must be penalized for interference with the goaltender. “If it goes in, it’s 100% goalie interference right?” Brind’Amour said. “(Meier)’s a big guy, he could stop.
” After the game, Devils MSG analyst and former goalie Corey Schneider took the side of Brind’Amour’s position, even if he didn’t come right out and say Meier deserved to be in the penalty box. “I don’t think he tried his hardest to avoid the collision,” Schneider said. “I’m not saying he did it on purpose.
” Devils coach Sheldon Keefe said he believed the contact was incidental, but former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper disagreed. “Fantastic win for our @Canes in Jersey!" wrote Cooper on X . “Good for them for sticking to their clean, tough game and not going all Rollerball on Timo Meier.
