Pune: The traffic department introduced new U-turns at four junctions between Kharadi and Wagholi last week leading to chaos on the roads, especially during peak hours. U-turns were introduced by blocking the main junctions from Shastrinagar Chowk to Somnathnagar. Although police claimed this allowed quick movement of traffic, residents raised concerns over the dangers of speeding vehicles and the confusion at U-turns.
Officials said the changes would boost smooth traffic flow once commuters get used to the changes. "Those who want to cross the road and go left or right will have to enter the BRTS route.
This will create chaos. Citizens new to the route or travelling after a long time will not be able to take the correct lane." Residents said the changes were choking traffic during peak hours.
The traffic department implemented the changes first at Shastrinagar Chowk, Vimannagar-Wadgaon Sheri Chowk, Phoenix mall junction and Durga junction. It was extended to Wagholi with a few more changes at Tata Garden, Chandanagar and Kharadi bypass. "The U-turn implementation is a good idea only if the process is smooth," said Gauri Kulkarni of Somnathnagar.
She said, "Taking U-turns is difficult because of encroachment on roadsides. It halts the traffic flow. Also, there are so many cabs waiting in queue with double parking near the Aga Khan Palace U-turn that it is difficult to turn there and then take a left towards Kalyaninagar.
" Residents complained the alterations were adding confusion to traffic jam during peak hours. Dilip Salunke, a resident of Kharadi, said, "Heavy vehicles, dumpers and cement mixer machines are dangerous and prevent normal movement of vehicles on the roads. These bulky vehicles cause major traffic.
Additionally, everyone will take time to get used to the U-turns." DCP (traffic) Amol Zende said, "We have seen very good results of the signal-free project in the first phase. Therefore, we have extended it on the entire route till Wagholi.
Improvement as per suggestions of residents, such as removal of encroachments and illegal parking among others, is underway. Commuters will have a good motoring experience in the coming days.".
