Well, this has been the leading topic of discussion which sparked after the Indian spice controversy took place recently, where a report noted that popular Indian spice brands contain chemicals that can cause cancer. Days after this news broke out, a new report revealed that over 400 products from India were flagged by the European Union between 2019 and 2024 after being called out to be highly contaminated. According to a report, 14 of the products are known to damage various organs as they use dangerous elements such as mercury and cadmium in fish among the other products.

Around 21 products including octopus and squid contained cadmium which raises the risk of chronic kidney and cardiovascular diseases, reported the Deccan Herald. 59 products contain pesticides The report further noted that at least 59 products contain carcinogenic pesticides. Moreover, chemicals like tricyclazole, a fungicide were found in rice, herbs and spices.



These food products were banned in the EU for their carcinogenic and genotoxic properties. Apart from these, over 52 more products were found to contain more than one pesticide or fungicide, moreover, some were with as much as all five in them. The report also stated that around 20 products had 2-chloroethanol.
