The whimsical illustrated world of Dr. Seuss is coming to Charleston’s Simpatico Gallery . The “Discover the Cat Behind the Hat" exhibit will be on display at the downtown gallery at 63 Broad St.
from May 2-4. The limited event will feature estate-authorized art that has been “adapted and reproduced” from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original illustrations and sculptures from his Secret Art Collection, according to The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection .
This art is unknown to the general public and will be available for purchase and acquisition throughout the weekend. The works are “eclectic” and “unique,” Simpatico owner John DiGiovanni told The Post and Courier, which is why it fits so well with the rest of the gallery. The collection comprises decades worth of secreted-away drawings, paintings and sculptures that Geisel created for his own personal pleasure over his lifetime.
These works expand the audience's understanding of famous Dr. Seuss characters like the Cat in the Hat, which became a recurring character for Geisel in his personal collection. The whimsical illustrated world of Dr.

Seuss estate. The gallery exhibit opening is in line with the Charleston Gallery Association’s First Friday Artwalk , which opens up the doors of galleries to the public to discover local art and meet with artists. “Dr.
Seuss hits a cord with so many different people, especially when they were growing up," said DiGiovanni. "..
. It's a wider range of interest than probably any other art show we've had there, because Dr. Seuss is so well-known.
" From sketches of characters from his beloved children's books to his three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures of creatures found in his imaginative worlds, the gallery will be both familiar and unexpected. “These collections are not going to be around forever,” DiGiovanni said. “It's an opportunity for people to own a piece of Dr.
Seuss — a piece of, really, American art history.” The exhibit will be open to the public 4-8 p.m.
