According to a report by Bloomberg , between 300 and 400 positions were cut, including around 100 at Respawn. “As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we’ve made select changes within our organisation that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth,” said spokesperson Justin Higgs in a statement to the publication.
Titanfall 2 (2016) In a further statement posted by Respawn on social media , the studio said that it “made the decision to step away from two early-stage incubation projects and make some targeted team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi ,” and that they will be “offering meaningful support to those impacted, including exploring new opportunities within EA.” One of the two projects cancelled was an apparent Titanfall sequel, which was codenamed R7 and was set to transform the series’ usual traditional multiplayer options into that of an extraction shooter like Escape from Tarkov or Synduality: Echo of Ada . The other project, an unannounced multiplayer FPS title , was reportedly the same one cancelled earlier this year in March.
Apex Legends (2019) IGN adds that some developers of the cancelled projects have been moved to work on other titles at EA Motive, including Battlefield and its upcoming third-person, single-player Iron Man game . According to its sources, the Respawn team will continue to work on Apex Legends and its next iteration, the next entry in the Star Wars: Jedi franchise, and support on the upcoming Star Wars: Zero Company . The latest layoffs follow the EA’s unfortunate trend of cancelling projects and cutting jobs, coming in the wake of similar hits to its other studios like BioWare and Codemasters , culminating in a massive round of layoffs affecting around 670 employees in early 2024, and a more recent restructuring of BioWare which saw key developers of last year’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard leaving the studio.
