Emmerdale Jonny McPherson is a firm favourite as Dr Liam - but it turns out he's starred on the soap several times before

Emmerdale fans have been left gobsmacked after realising Jonny McPherson played a completely different character before Dr Liam Cavanagh. Jonny joined the cast back in 2014 playing the beloved village doctor, Liam. And since then, he’s become a firm favourite with viewers and has played a part in several big storylines.

From his many relationships to the heartbreaking death of his daughter Leanna (Mimi Slinger), Liam’s time in the Dales has not been short of drama. Especially recently, as February’s intense storyline featuring a limousine accident had viewers on the edge of their seats, fearing Liam could be killed off - and fortunately he wasn’t. Liam has also reignited his relationship with Chas Dingle ( Lucy Pargeter) after separating from Ella Forster (Paula Lane).

However, Liam and Chas’ love story has not been plain sailing, and following the chaos and drama surrounding Ella, the couple reluctantly put their wedding day on hold this month. However, it turns out Liam was not Jonny’s first role on Emmerdale as he previously appeared on the ITV soap several times. Back in 2008, he popped up in the Dales playing another doctor, Jonathan Boam – who helped Donna Windsor (Verity Rushworth) after she was in a car crash.

This role was Jonny’s first-ever venture into TV. Two years later he made an appearance again - this time as a nurse on duty on the night that Jackson Walsh (Marc Silcock) was hit by a train. Fans have recently shared their shock after finding out about Jonny’s past Emmerdale roles.

On an Emmerdale Facebook fan page, alongside a photo of Jonny during his past stint, one person penned: “Jonny McPherson on Emmerdale in 2010.” Someone else penned: “Well I didn’t know that.” A third then chimed in: “Same here there are so many actors in it now that played different people.

” Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm.
