Despite the approval of his leaves, his manager allegedly asked him to work and complete their targets during the leave. The harsh reality of ‘workplace toxicity’ has once again been thrust into the spotlight after a recent social media post from a man detailing his harrowing experience at a new company went viral. The post, which resonated deeply with many online users and left them fuming, revealed how he was shockingly placed on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) just five months after joining the organisation.
The reason? The employee claimed that his toxic manager pressured him to remain constantly available even during his ‘paid leave’. When he refused to work, the situation reportedly escalated, and he was put on a PIP. Narrating the ordeal on Reddit, the employee claimed that his organisation has a ‘6-day working’ work pattern, where his manager expects the employees to work on Sundays as well.
“My manager has expectations that we spend 5-6 hours on Sundays as well to meet the very rigid deadlines that have been set for us," he said. Moving on, the man opened up about the incident that led to him being on PIP. As per the post, he had requested 4 days of leave, which was approved after a lot of debate.
However, despite the approval, his manager allegedly asked him to work and complete their targets during the leave. The employee informed the manager that working during the leave was impossible due to travelling, the manager was reportedly unfazed, saying, “I’d like to see that." What happened next left the Redditor stunned.
Upon returning from their leave, the employee found his manager to be cold and distant. Later that day, he got a call from HR to inform him that his performance had been deemed subpar, and he had been placed on a PIP. The post concluded with Reddit asking, “All this just because I refused to work during my leaves.
This is just so messed up that I can’t understand how it can legally even happen. Do organisations have such power that they can do whatever they feel they can? As an employee, do I not have any legal recourse to deal with such harassment and toxicity being spewed by this company?" As soon as the post gained traction online, social media users flocked in to show their support and attention. Many users found the incident ‘unfair’ and expressed their outrage, while others offered the Reddit users a piece of advice to tackle the situation.
A few called such ‘toxic patterns’ common for Indian corporate offices. “Name and shame such a company and that sh**ty manager. Those managers deserve a full chappal shot.
I wish that the manager would get fired too and beg for a job," read a comment. Another suggested, “Document everything—how your performance is measured, what your last rating was, and try leaving as soon as possible. This is a stupid reason for a PIP.
" “Nothing will ever work. Your hierarchy is flawed, and people are already slaves. They don’t want you to disrupt their flow and chain of so-called command.
For your benefit. Start looking out for better opportunities where you can breathe and have some value as a human. You’ll find a better opportunity sooner or later.
About your PIP, perform as usual. If they let you go, go out with your head raised high," said another. A user advised, “Ask HR to drop an email, looping in your manager, mentioning the exact KRA/parameters that qualify for PIP.
" “Act as if you are scared of PIP. Work on delivery and document all actions. Spend time finding a new job (in private).
Resign considering the full notice period and don’t have any assumptions. They will not relieve you early, resign and move on to the next job. This is one of the reasons people move abroad because managers don’t make assumptions about taking leave," stated another.
