'End of an era' - sadness after longstanding restaurant announces closure

People have shared their fond memories of a Brighton restaurant after it announced its closure. Browns Bar and Brasserie in Duke Street confirmed on Monday that its Brighton store will be closing. The popular restaurant has been trading for over 50 years.

Many readers took to social media to share their feelings about the closure, with several people describing it as “the end of an era”. Zoe Beasley said: “Sad news. Browns was the best place to dine in the seventies.



It was very up market. The spaghetti bolognese and their steak and ale pie was the best in town.” Jilly Simmonds added: “Sad news, been a great place that I have known all my life as a Brightonian.

Lots of happy memories.” Alan Lawson said: " I worked there nice place and people." However, other readers felt the closure reflected changing times.

Rod Clarke said: “It's one of my favourite restaurants but as someone else said, many more hospitality businesses are struggling. We just lost cote in Haywards Heath. I know it's a chain but it very sad.

” Sharon Walker-Latter said: “I’ve been going there since it opened in the 70’s - I was 14, now 67. However, in the last few years it’s deteriorated.” John Moorcraft added: “Had its day and that was 80s and early 90s.

” Browns is yet to confirm a date for the closure however customers are unable to book beyond May 10 on the Browns website. On TripAdvisor, the manager of the restaurant confirmed the closure, saying: "Yes, it's sad news for all of our team and guests. "The closure affects only the Brighton branch, the rest of our branches across the UK are operating as usual.
