To celebrate International Women’s Day, Endeavour hosted ‘Women on the Water,’ an event “encouraging female participation in sailing and maritime initiatives.” A spokesperson said, “Endeavour is a registered charity and nonprofit dedicated to building self-confidence and life skills by engaging diverse youth across Bermuda in experiential learning through sailing. “In celebration of International Women’s Day, Endeavour proudly hosts its annual Women on the Water event to bring together young women from across Bermuda while encouraging female participation in sailing and maritime initiatives.
Through sailing, skill-building, and meaningful connections, the event inspires confidence, fosters a sense of belonging, and empowers the next generation of female leaders in sailing, maritime, and STEAM fields. “The initiative supports Endeavour’s mission to advance gender equity in sailing and the maritime industry by creating inclusive, hands-on opportunities for youth of all backgrounds. Since 2015, over 7,000 young people have taken part in Endeavour’s programmes – over 50% of whom are female.
Endeavour’s commitment to gender equity and the empowerment of all women and girls through its socially inclusive initiatives aligns with Goal 5 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “The March 2025 event brought together 17 young women aged 12–19 from ten schools across the island for a day of sailing, team-building, and empowerment. The schools represented were Bermuda Centre for Creative Learning, Bermuda Institute, Dellwood Middle School, Saltus, Sandys Secondary Middle School, Somersfield Academy, The Berkeley Institute, The Bermuda High School, Warwick Academy, and Whitney Institute.
” Jennifer Pitcher, Endeavour’s Executive Director, said, “We’re incredibly proud to create safe and supportive opportunities where young women of all backgrounds, abilities, and skill levels can experience the water, connect and grow. “It’s a privilege to be part of their journeys of self-discovery and growth. We’re grateful for the chance to get to know them, to encourage and support them, and to witness their confidence grow.
Watching these extraordinary young women shine, on and off the water, as they embrace their potential and strive for their best is truly inspiring.” The spokesperson said, “Student reflections highlighted the joy of sailing, forming new friendships, and being encouraged by positive role models.” Assistant Instructor Erin Telford-Brangman said, “It was amazing to see young female sailors support each other, and build new friendships.
The guest speakers shared inspiring words of encouragement to dream big and believe in ourselves while working hard towards our goals. It’s important for young women to feel supported and celebrated.” 13-year old Kiera Trott-Smith, an Endeavour Grad and Whitney Institute M2 student, said, “I enjoyed the activities we did, and I also enjoyed sailing on the Hobie Wave catamarans.
It was a lot of fun.” 12-year old Soraiya Trott, an Endeavour Grad and Bermuda High School Y8 student, said, “I had a great time and I enjoyed making new friends.” Endeavour’s Operations Manager, Olivia Reilly, said, “We’re proud to unite young women from different schools, giving them the chance to try new things and build skills both on and off the water.
This female-only event empowers young women to connect, grow, and learn from one another—including older Bermudian youth actively involved in sailing and the maritime industry.” The spokesperson said, “This year’s participants sailed Hobie Waves with plenty of laughter, then took on fitness challenges that strengthened their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, and heard from guest speakers including Endeavour Springboard Grads now working full-time in the maritime field who shared their inspiring journeys. “A heartfelt thank you to our guest speakers for sharing their passion and career journeys, empowering our young female sailors to believe in themselves, dream big, and work hard to achieve their goals.
” Endeavour Programme Instructor, Tre’sure Nanette, said, “I am excited to work with Endeavour. Since completing the Springboard Programme, I have continued to grow my skills and confidence. I have the best office in Bermuda working on the ocean, and I love seeing students from all walks of life build their confidence on and off the water every day.
” Endeavour Programme Instructor Nijanae Pemberton said, “My favourite part of working with Endeavour is witnessing students’ growth and the positive impact across all of the programmes. The Women on the Water event is such an inspiring initiative – it opens the door for young women in Bermuda to explore sailing and maritime opportunities. I’m excited to see even more female representation in Bermuda’s sailing community and maritime industry in the future.
” The spokesperson said, “Attendees were also inspired by Sundée Faulkner and Lindsey Matthews from Dolphin Quest, who highlighted ocean conservation opportunities while shining a light on women in maritime roles.” Ms. Faulkner, Sales and Outreach Manager at Dolphin Quest, said, “Thank you Endeavour for the opportunity to join the Women on the Water event.
It was a pleasure to share our passion for the ocean as women who experience it daily through our work in marine conservation education, as liveaboards and even recreationally. We hope we have inspired the participants to find the courage to explore beyond our shores and seek new adventures.” Kim Raymond, Endeavour’s Community Engagement Coordinator, said, “A big thank you to our incredible volunteers, Noah Astwood and Erin Telford-Brangman, and our team members whose dedication and positive energy were key to the success of our annual Women on the Water event.
As graduates of the Endeavour Assistant Instructor and Maritime Career Springboard programmes, they give their time to support younger sailors, inspiring them to believe in their potential and achieve great things.” The spokesperson said, “Special thanks to the Mount Saint Agnes P.E.
Department for lending equipment for fun and interactive fitness activities. Thank you also to Cassine for donating reef-safe sunscreen, The Tuck Shop for delicious cupcakes, and The Bone Fish Bar & Grill for a healthy lunch. “Endeavour is truly grateful to our donors and supporters – especially our lead founding partner, Orbis Investments, along with Arch Capital Group Ltd.
and PwC Bermuda. With their support, we’re empowering Bermuda’s youth and inspiring the next generation of female mariners, leaders, and changemakers. “Learn more at , registered charity #977.
