Enrolment in the first year of primary school is mandatory for all children who turn six by September 15, but it is also possible to enrol those who turn six later, although this is subject to the availability of a vacancy. Also, for preschool, there may not be schools for everyone. The Government announced this month the opening of competitions for an additional 5,000 vacancies, but a recent survey had revealed that around 10,000 vacancies were needed to meet all needs.
On 1 July, schools will post placement lists. Families who are unable to secure a place in the public school system will be able to apply for vacancies that arise following the competitions for an additional 5,000 places in private and cooperative educational establishments and charitable institutions, for which €42.5 million was allocated by the Ministry of Education and Science.
The neediest families will have priority and the idea is to reinforce the offer in the municipalities with the greatest demand, which are mainly located in the Lisbon area, such as Sintra, Seixal, Amadora, Odivelas, Lisbon and Barreiro. Families have until the end of May to register, and there is no advantage in submitting registrations first, as schools only accept the applications after the deadline. For other students, there is also a registration calendar: In the second half of June, between the 16th and 27th, registrations will be carried out for students who will be in the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th grades of schooling in the next school year.
Between July 1st and 11th, the registration period for the remaining students in the 1st cycle and 5th year will take place, and between July 15th and 22nd, registration for those going to the 10th and 12th years of schooling will take place. On August 1st, the lists of students placed in all school years beyond preschool and 1st grade will be published. Enrolment is only mandatory for students who are now entering the 1st year for the first time.
All other years are done automatically, except when there is a change in teaching cycle, school, course or when it is necessary to choose some subjects, as happens in high school. All other renewals are done automatically. The Ministry recommends that families include the five schools they prefer on the registration form, because if the preferences are not written down, the process will be carried out by administrative placement by the Directorate-General for School Establishments ( DGEstE ).
Enrolment must be done online on the Enrolment Portal, but it is still possible to do it in person at schools..
