EVANSVILLE, Ind. — An Evansville man is behind bars after police say he jumped off a second story balcony to evade arrest early Friday morning. According to a public police report from the Evansville Police Department , around midnight on April 18, officers were called to a residence in the 500 block of Jefferson Avenue , near Washington Avenue and South Garvin Street, after a 911 caller hung up on the operator.
Shortly after officers arrived, they say they saw 48-year-old Craig Barnett jump from the second story balcony of one of the apartment buildings. Police say Barnett was then immediately apprehended. As police began to investigate, they eventually arrested Barnett for robbery, domestic battery, intimidation with a deadly weapon, interfering with reporting a crime, resisting law enforcement and criminal mischief.
The investigation also showed the incident had occurred in the presence of a 5-year-old. Police noted that Barnett had a prior domestic violence charge against the victim. He was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation before being transported to the Vanderburgh County Jail.
Online court records show Barnett has been given a no-contact order against the victim and he is being held on $7,500 cash bond. His initial court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
