Hollin Pierce will not travel far to begin his NFL career. The former Rutgers offensive tackle, who started 50 consecutive games to conclude his college career, was signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent, according to 247Sports. Pierce’s journey to the NFL was not as straight forward.
The Trenton native arrived in Piscataway as a walk-on, overcoming weight issues to develop into one of the most reliable tackles in the Big Ten. Pierce was a constant force for an offensive line that improved steadily throughout his college career under former Giants assistant Pat Flaherty. He played 919 out of 943 possible snaps for the Scarlet Knights last season, per ProFootballFocus, and was highly effective.
Pierce allowed just one sack, five quarterback hits and 15 quarterback hurries in 473 pass-blocking snaps last fall, per PFF. He was called for just four penalties across 3,172 career snaps. Here is a scouting report of Pierce from NFL.
com analyst Lance Zierlein: Four-year starting tackle with unrivaled measurables and disruptive power for his height. Pierce plays with adequate technique in the run game and imposes his massive frame on static ends to widen the C-gap. He will struggle, however, with shorter edge defenders and athletic penetrators.
Pierce is a heavy-legged leaner with average punch timing but exceptional length that keeps rushers out of his frame. His size makes him hard to navigate and he does a nice job of pushing rushers past the pocket. Quick inside counters could eat him up on the next level, though.
It won’t always go smoothly, but Pierce’s effective use of his traits gives him a chance to become an NFL right tackle. Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust. Please consider supporting us with a subscription.
