FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield High School baseball team staked its claim to the Greater Sacramento League championship on Thursday. Now they will have to wait a week to see if Armijo joins them. Fairfield scored early and often in a 19-1 win at Hiram Johnson in Sacramento.
The Falcons finished the league season 13-1 for the school’s first championship since 2006 (in the Solano County Athletic Conference). By a quirk in the league schedule, Armijo has two games left next week against Johnson. If the Royals win both games they will be co-champions.
If they lose one, Fairfield will have the title outright. “I’m so proud of our guys and all the work they have put in to prepare for this season,” said head coach Alex Parrott, in his first season. “I’m so happy they’ve been able to reap the rewards of a championship.
” Donavan Luu had a big day at the plate and on the mound. Luu went 5-for-5 with a triple and four RBI. He also pitched 3.
1 innings and allowed just three hits, one earned run, three walks and struck out six batters. Devin Knox pitched the other 1.2 innings and struck out four.
Knox hit a double and drove in a run to contribute on offense as well. Tristen Smith, Trustin Mitchell, Ricardo Martin, Destin Torrence and Christian Rambeau all had two hits apiece. Smith doubled and drove in three runs.
Mitchell had a double, triple and knocked in four runs. Martin had two RBI. Rambeau also had a double and two RBI.
Torrence also doubled. Robert Garcia, Jaloni Williams, Zach O’Reilly, Pat O’Reilly and Valentino Alba joined the hit parade. Garcia doubled and drove in a run.
Pat O’Reilly had a double and two RBI. Fairfield scored seven runs in the first inning and added nine in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth. “We came into the season confident in our defense and our pitching staff,” Parrott said.
“But our guys have been outstanding at the plate. We knew we could go as far as our bats would take us.”.
