Newhaven Fort will host Falconry in WWII: The Feathered Frontier on May 11, featuring live displays, historic birds, and family-friendly wartime storytelling as part of its 2025 events calendar.

Newhaven Fort will host a falconry event with a World War II theme. The event, called Falconry in WWII: The Feathered Frontier, will be held on May 11. It is part of the fort's 2025 events calendar.

The event will feature Raphael Historic Falconry, the UK's longest-established historic falconers. They will present displays on the role of carrier pigeons in wartime communication and the use of falcons in military operations. The story of a falconry bird that survived a prisoner-of-war camp will also be shared.

Visitors will also learn about how birds inspired innovations in aircraft design. The role of trained animal rescue dogs will also be highlighted. Lindsay Lawrence, general manager at Newhaven Fort, said: "This event will be a fantastic opportunity to enjoy up-close encounters with some beautiful birds and learn about the little-known role they played during WWII.

"The falconry displays are sure to captivate all ages, making it a brilliant day out for the whole family." The event is included with standard admission. This is just one of several family-friendly activities planned at the fort for 2025.

Other activities include workshops, guided tours, exhibitions, and talks. Seasonal highlights such as Halloween-themed ghost tours and a festive Storytime with Scrooge in December are also planned. Newhaven Fort reopened earlier this year after a £7.

5 million restoration. The site now features a new adventure playground, improved interactive exhibitions, and a 1970s-themed escape room. Visitors can also explore newly opened areas, including the Battery Observation Post, with panoramic views of the Sussex coastline.

The on-site café, run by the Cadence Cycle Club, offers a range of food and drinks. For more information or to book tickets, visit the Newhaven Fort website..
