The future of quarterback Kirk Cousins has been one of the most talked-about topics related to the Atlanta Falcons all offseason, and more details on that have emerged after the conclusion of the 2025 NFL draft. While the future at quarterback appears to be completely in the hands of Michael Penix Jr. for now, Cousins still remains on the current roster.
There are no guarantees that will continue to be the case, but Falcons GM Terry Fontenot is putting nothing off of the table. He says the team is staying "patient" but that "we're always open."“(I'm) not just talking about Kirk, but really anybody on our roster,” Fontenot said.
“I’ve probably already talked to six or seven GMs since the draft ended. They’re talking about their roster, we’re talking about our roster, because the draft shifts some things in terms of needs and surplus.”But if the right offer comes along, it is plenty reasonable to believe that the Falcons will part ways with Cousins at the right time.
And, once again, that goes for anyone who may be on the roster in Atlanta as things sit.“If something comes to us with Kirk or any other player that makes sense and it’s going to help this team, then we’re going to be aggressive and we’re going to do it,” Fontenot continued. “But if it’s not going to ultimately help this team, we always have to ask that question: Is it the best for the Atlanta Falcons?"It will be interesting to see how things play out for Cousins, who got off to a hot start during the 2024 season before faltering, finishing the season with touchdown to interception ratio of 18 to 16.
But it is evident the Falcons are confident in the way they are moving forward -- whichever direction that ultimately proves to be.This article originally appeared on Falcons Wire: Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins' future addressed by GM.
