FLATONIA — Chris Sodek was a basketball coach before becoming the superintendent at Flatonia. He recalls being in the gym with his son Duke when his young daughter Summer caught his attention. Summer was dribbling a basketball with each hand, and Chris knew from that moment there would be a special player in the family.

“My whole life I’ve pretty much worked on basketball and been in the gym,” Summer Sodek said. “My father kind of led me to it, but I enjoy it. Just the people that I’ve met through it.

I’ve met all my friends through basketball and I’m so thankful to be around it. It’s a fun sport.” Sodek recently completed her junior season for the Lady Bulldogs, who won the District 28-2A championship and advanced to the Division I regional final before finishing with a 29-5 record.

Sodek averaged 27.9 points, 7 rebounds, 6.4 steals, 5.

2 deflections and 4.5 assists per game. She was named the MVP of the All-District 28-2A.

She will play for the Dallas Lex club team, sponsored by Under Armour this summer. Sodek was disappointed Flatonia didn’t go further in the playoffs, but was selected as the MVP of the 2024-25 Victoria Advocate All-Area Basketball Team for the second straight season. Q: You dad won a state championship coaching at Mumford in 2014.

Do you remember anything about that? A: I do remember a little bit. I remember him walking out of the gym and looking really happy. I don’t remember a lot from it, but I do remember that.

Q: Your role changed somewhat this season when Allie and Abbie Uzzell joined the team. What was that like for you? A: They made a huge impact in the best ways possible. They were great friends and great leaders on the team.

I was so thankful to have them. Q: The team lost to San Saba in the regional final. What does San Saba do so well, and how do you better prepare for that round? A: What I’ve learned from playing them this year is they’re very sound on defense and they always play very well together and they’re always well rounded.

I think next year we’re going to be ready for it. Q: How much time do you usually spend in the gym? A: I’m pretty much in the gym every day. Some days, I take no more than 30 minutes.

AAU practices can take up to three hours, but I would say on a daily basis, I’m in here for an hour. Q: You also play volleyball and run track. Do you enjoy playing multiple sports? A: I enjoy playing volleyball and getting the opportunity to play all those sports.

I think it helps us a lot in basketball. Q: You have some offers to play in college. How will you make your decision? A: I just want to go to a college where I have the opportunity to play.

Go somewhere where I’m happy. I’m not too worried about the other stuff. Q: What do you foresee for your senior season? A: On this team, I know I have to score.

But with Allie (Uzzell) , Elza (Herrera) and Kinsey (Cedillo) leaving, I’m going to have to rebound well and pass well. I think everyone is going to have to get better, but we’re going to be older and more experienced..
