The head gardener at Garden Organic has shared her recommendations for three vegetables you should sow in your garden in April. While tomatoes is one of the most common vegetables to grow yourself , due to how easy they are to grow and how versitile the vegetable is for cooking, its far from the only veg you can sow in your garden . A woman named Emma, who works as the head chef at Garden Organic, a company who focuses on teaching others how to grow organic fruit and veg by themselves, has shared her top three vegetables besides tomatoes that you should sow in April.
"Everybody thinks that tomatoes are one of the best things to sow in April, however here are three other vegetables that I think really deserve their place at the top," Emma said in a TikTok video before jumping into her list. "So, beetroot. This one is a heritage variety called Long Blood Red," Emma said as she showed the seeds.
"As the name suggests, it has more of a longer shape than a spherical one, very flavoursome." To sow beetroot, create shallow drills (about 2.5cm deep) in well-prepared soil, spacing rows 30cm apart.
Place seeds about 10cm apart in the drill, cover with soil, and water. Early and maincrop should be sowed directly outside, while baby beetroots should be sown into trays, pots and modules to transplant, according to Garden Organic . Showing the seeds for a white turnip variety, Emma said: "Now you can get lots of different varieties of radish, but this one is white which is what makes it different.
" Just like beetroots, radish seeds can be sown outdoors in April. To sow radish seeds, prepare a well-drained seedbed, sow the seeds 1cm (1⁄2 inch) deep and 2.5-5cm (1-2 inches) apart, and cover lightly with soil.
Ensure the soil is moist, and water as needed, especially when seeds are germinating "And then lettuce," Emma said. "Loos Tennis Ball, sort of a loose sleeved green type. Very nice.
" Tennis ball lettuces are classic, loose, cabbage-headed varieties that can be sown both outdoors or in trays, pots or modules to transplant. To sow lettuce seeds, prepare a seedbed either indoors in a tray or outdoors in a shallow drill, ensuring the soil is moist. Sow the seeds thinly, either scattered or in rows, and cover lightly with soil or vermiculite, as some light can aid germination.
Keep the soil consistently moist and protect young seedlings from pests and harsh weather..
