Plans have been submitted by Three Acre Brewery to transform the 19th-century signal box at Uckfield train station.

A former railway signal box could be converted into a micro-pub. Plans have been submitted to Wealden District Council to transform the 19th-century signal box at Uckfield station, which is currently not in use. The building, originally used to control a level crossing, was later utilised as a taxi office.

Situated in Uckfield town centre, the building holds historical significance, having been in its current location for around 150 years. Three Acre Brewery Ltd, a local craft beer producer, is behind the proposal. The company intends to lease the property from Uckfield Town Council, the current owner, which purchased the building to ensure its preservation.

The council has traditionally relied on tenants for maintenance, with limited funds otherwise available for the building's upkeep. Three Acre Brewery has pledged to invest several thousand pounds in renovating the building, refitting it as a public house, and maintaining the exterior.

The applicant says the proposal would improve the building's condition significantly, allowing it to generate income, with profits reinvested into the premises for continued maintenance and preservation. The conversion will involve upgrading the building to comply with current building regulations, providing improved toilet facilities, a service area, and seating/tables for public use.
