When asked to describe her mom Gabrielle Union’ s style in just a few words, six-year-old Kaavia James Union Wade does not skip a beat: "Fancy and perfect.” “Fancy,” she explains, comes down to her mom’s collection of jewels. Union’s most prized piece of bling is a Tiffany & Co.
starfish hair clip that she wore to the 2024 Met Gala with her husband, retired NBA star Dwyane Wade . She paired it with a mermaid-style dress that was inspired by her “water baby,” who started swimming at 5 months old. Related: World's Most Beautiful: Of Course It's Demi! Beyond sporting Union’s jewels, Kaavia loves trying on her mom's high heels (so she can be "tall like Angel Reese ,” says Union) — and gravitates towards anything pink.
She’s also unafraid to speak her mind, something Union says she got from her and Wade: “She definitely has a mind of her own.” Her individual expression is encouraged by her parents, whose biggest advice to their youngest daughter is , “Whatever you want do..
.Whether it's makeup or hair or how she dresses, it's completely up to her. It's her body.
These are her choices,” Union says. “You don't have to follow anybody," she assures Kaavia. "It's no one else's choice but yours how you express yourself.
” Union: What's your favorite thing that we do together, me and you? Kaavia: When we go on a date together. Union: Aw, that's my favorite too. Kaavia: What's your favorite thing our family does together? Union: My favorite thing our family does together is I like when we all eat together outside and we spend time together outside in our backyard.
Union: How would you describe Mommy's style? Kaavia: Fancy and perfect. Union: Oh, that's a big compliment, fancy and perfect. What makes it fancy? Kaavia: Because you have a lot of jewels.
Union: Oh, yeah. Shout out to Tiffany. Kaavia: Why do you like being fancy? Union: Sometimes I like being fancy when I'm going out and I'm seeing different people.
I want them to know that not only can I be cool and casual, but I can also spruce it up and be fancy. But I don't always like to be fancy. Mommy's in a robe a lot.
Would you agree? Kaavia: Yes. Kaavia: And why do you always like wearing wigs? Union: Ooh, triggered. Because I like to switch it up.
I like to switch up my look. Because sometimes I want to have short hair and sometimes I want to have long hair, sometimes I want to have blonde hair. And with wigs, I can do all those different things and play all these different kinds of characters.
Union: Why do you like to wear wigs? Kaavia: So I can have long hair. Union: But you do have long hair. Kaavia: Not poofy long hair.
Union: You do have poofy long hair, and silky straight long hair, and curly long hair. You just like change, right? Kaavia: Yes. Union: When you come in Mommy's bathroom or my closet, what do you always come to steal? Kaavia: Your shoes.
Union: My shoes. What kind of shoes? Kaavia: High heels. Union: Yes.
What do you like about high heels? Kaavia: I love getting bigger with them and I love just pretending that I'm bigger. Union: You want to be tall like Angel Reese? Kaavia: Yeah. Union: What’s your favorite matchy-matchy outfit [that we wear]? Kaavia: Pajamas Union: Yeah.
Which pajamas? Kaavia: The Little Mermaid ones. Union: When you give Mommy and Daddy makeovers, what do you like best about that? Kaavia: When I do your makeup, I like to look you good. But when I do daddy's makeup, he just doesn't like it.
He wipes it off. Union: Oh, no. But still, I think he looks good.
Kaavia: Me too. Union: Especially his eye shadow. Union: What’s your favorite piece of makeup? Do you like blush or.
..? Kaavia: No, it's eyeshadow.
Union: Oh, eyeshadow. Kaavia: Wait, no, it's not eyeshadow. It's mascara.
Union: Mascara. Can you do your own makeup? Kaavia: Yeah, I can. Union: Yeah, you can Union: Do you think Daddy or I take [the longest to get ready]? Zaya ? Kaavia: You take a long time.
Union: That was so fast. You don't want to think about it? No? Kaavia: You always take so long because you have to get your makeup done. I'm like, "Mommy, hurry up.
" Union: I mean, the other people have to get their makeup done, too, but not as long as Mommy? Kaavia: They go quicker. Union: They go quicker. Okay.
Yeah. Noted. PEOPLE: You’ve said that you’re archiving some of your past looks, which are in the collection so far? Union: With the Met [Gala] looks, we don't get to archive them all here.
The only one I've been able to keep is the first one. So out of the Met looks, there's only one that's in this glass case, that's hung up, but my wedding dresses, because I had more than one, certain red carpet looks that are in there, just looks that I think she might appreciate that'll definitely come back, that I just want to save for her. PEOPLE: Is there one look in particular that you would love to see her wear in the future? Union: Oh, my wedding dress.
My wedding dress. Kaavia: I saw your wedding dress. Union: Yes.
Would you want to wear that when you get married one day? Kaavia: Yes. PEOPLE: What advice are you and your husband passing down to all your children about beauty, style, self-expression? Union: The advice that we give [Kaavia] is, "It's whatever you want do." When it comes to her hair, obviously I'm obsessed with it.
There's a lot of work and a small team that does her hair to make sure it's healthy. But what she does with it, how she chooses to express herself, whether it's makeup, or hair, or how she dresses, it's completely up to her. It's her body.
These are her choices. And as long as it's safe and appropriate for the weather, then it's really up to her. And you don't have to follow anybody, it's no one else's choice but yours how you express yourself.
PEOPLE: As she grows up, what are the qualities that you see of your own and Dwyane’s in her? Union: That she definitely has a mind of her own. She is not afraid to speak up for herself. Kaavia: I'm not afraid, sometimes at school.
Union: Sometimes at school. Kaavia: A lot of times, like every day. Union: We do have to reiterate advocating for yourself with your peers.
It's less authority, more peer to peer in that you don't have to always just do what everyone else is doing just so they stay friends with you. That's not real friendship. It's you get to do your things that you like to do.
And sometimes they do what they like to do. Union: Well, when we're done here, do you want to keep this look or do you want to go back to casual Kaavia? Kaavia: Keep this look. Union: I think a lot of people can relate when you get your hair and makeup done and you just want to keep going out, because everyone should see your hair and makeup.
Kaavia: I'm just going to wipe off my makeup and just have my hair out. Union: Oh, okay. That sounds fair.
Union: What do you think Mommy's looking forward to most when you get older? Kaavia: Loving me still. Union: Well, I think when you get older, I'm looking forward to all of her firsts. But our other kids have not really been into.
.. Kaavia: There’s so many kids Union: .
..school dances and homecomings.
So I'm hoping we get some homecomings and prom. Union: Do you feel like you're about done with answering questions? Kaavia: Yes. Union: Do you want to thank everybody? Kaavia: Yes.
Thank you for being here. Union: And what else? I think they all did a pretty good job. What do you think? Kaavia: Yes.
I think they did a pretty good job. I would love to see them again.
