Gas consumption up in Punjab, down in other 3 provinces

ISLAMABAD - The consumption of gas in the province of Punjab has increased by 1.52 percent to 1401MMCFD while consumption of the three surplus gas producing provinces declined from 6.19 to 16.

The indigenous gas supplies/production declined by almost 8.6 percent during the FY2023-24 to 2,638MMCFD from 2,888MMCFD last year whereas gas consumption declined by over 4.5 percent to 3,323MMCFD from 3,481MMCFD during the same period.

The deficit between production and consumption was partially met through RLNG import and the imported RLNG supplies declined by 2.59 percent during the year to 900MMCFD from 924MMCFD last year mainly due to supply constraint and higher prices of LNG in the international market. The main consumer of natural gas was the power sector, consuming 30.

84 percent (1,060.13MMCFD), followed by domestic sector with 23.89 percent (821MMCFD), fertilizer 19 percent (756MMCFD), captive power 8.

Out of total gas supplies 1,023MMCFD as against 1,135MMCFD last year, were supplied by the gas fields/producers directly to their consumers (fertilizer and power plant) and the remaining through gas utility companies. Sindh’s share in total gas supply is 49 percent while the shares of Balochistan, KP and Punjab in gas supplies were 14, 9.

87 and 2 percent respectively. The share of RLNG increased by 2 percent from 23 percent to 25 percent in total gas supplies during the year. The share of Balochistan in the consumption of gas decreased by 16.

Approximately 98pc of gas was produced from the gas fields located in Sindh, Balochistan and KP, while the remaining 2 percent was supplied from the gas fields located in Punjab. The total indigenous gas supply is 2638MMCFD, with Sindh contribution 49 percent of the gas supplied 1718.
