It is both ironic and troubling that while SNGPL and SSGC were announcing gas load shedding, new natural gas discoveries were being made—one in KP by MARI and another accidentally in Karachi by TPL during water drilling. This exposes a glaring contradiction. Why are domestic users left without gas while industrial generators—reportedly 880 of them—continue to receive uninterrupted supplies? The truth is that local natural gas is being diverted to these industrial plants, depriving homes and small businesses of a basic necessity.

Pakistan’s power sector is already struggling due to reduced electricity demand. Redirecting gas back to domestic users and pushing industries to rely on the national grid could revive the power sector and ease the gas crisis at the same time. It’s time the Ministry of Energy faced this issue head-on.

The public deserves transparency, not excuses. Without urgent reforms, gas shortages will persist—not because of a lack of resources, but due to mismanagement and misplaced priorities. Anti-polio campaign set for April 21-25 SHAHRYAR KHAN BASEER P.
