WEST STOCKBRIDGE — In a lonesome room at Columbia College, Georgia O’Keeffe knelt on the floor over a bed of loose papers, her fingers black with charcoal as she unlearned everything she knew. It was Christmas break, 1915. This is an episode from O’Keeffe’s early life — before her name became synonymous with some of the most iconic paintings of the 20th century — during a teaching stint at the then-women’s college in South Carolina.
