His remarks come after YEA Chief Executive Malik Basintale signaled that the agency’s waste management contract with Zoomlion would not be renewed in its current form, sparking fears of layoffs and service gaps.“The information in the public domain does not fully align with the facts,” Frimpong Addo stated, emphasizing the need for urgent stakeholder dialogue to clarify the situation. He assured citizens that environmental sanitation efforts would remain unaffected, despite speculation that up to 40,000 workers linked to the YEA’s sanitation module could face job losses.

“People should not panic. This issue falls within Parliament’s purview, and we will address it comprehensively,” he added during a press briefing after a four-region tour of waste treatment facilities operated by Zoomlion’s parent company, Jospong Group. The parliamentary committee inspected sites including the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant, wastewater and medical waste treatment facilities in Ashanti Region, and integrated recycling plants in Western North, Bono, and Ahafo regions.

Frimpong Addo, who is also the Member of Parliament for Manso Adubia, stressed that findings from the tour would inform a detailed report to Parliament. “If contract terms require review, we will propose solutions through legislative debate,” he said, underscoring Parliament’s role in resolving the matter. He further highlighted the necessity of collaboration between government and private entities like Zoomlion to sustain sanitation progress.

“Challenges in waste management demand cooperation, not alarm. We must engage stakeholders to address bottlenecks responsibly,” he stated.Ghana’s waste management sector has long relied on public-private partnerships, with Zoomlion playing a central role in landfill operations, recycling, and sanitation employment programs since 2006.

However, debates over contract transparency and efficiency have periodically surfaced, reflecting broader tensions in balancing environmental goals with economic and social priorities. As urbanization accelerates, the government faces mounting pressure to modernize infrastructure while safeguarding jobs in a sector critical to public health. Frimpong Addo’s appeal for calm underscores the delicate equilibrium between policy reforms and maintaining stability in essential services.
