The resolution, passed during the WMA’s 229th Council Session in Montevideo, follows escalating tensions in Turkey after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and other opposition figures, which ignited nationwide demonstrations. The association highlighted severe health risks linked to these agents, citing short-term injuries such as respiratory distress, skin irritation, and eye damage, alongside long-term psychological trauma. Medical professionals emphasized that the effects extend beyond protesters to bystanders, residents, and healthcare workers, undermining public safety.

“The use of riot control agents violates the right to peaceful protest and international human rights standards,” said Dr. Jack Resneck, Chair of the WMA Council. “Health workers must operate without interference to protect all individuals, irrespective of political views.

”The WMA urged Turkish officials to halt the use of these measures immediately, investigate alleged abuses, and hold perpetrators accountable under international law. The call underscores broader concerns about the intersection of public health and civil liberties during civil unrest.Turkey’s recent protests reflect deepening political divisions, with international observers increasingly scrutinizing its adherence to human rights norms.

Historically, the misuse of riot control tools has drawn global criticism, underscoring the need for protocols balancing security and humanitarian safeguards. The WMA’s stance aligns with growing advocacy for medical neutrality in conflict zones worldwide. News Ghana, Latest Updates and Breaking News of Ghana, News Ghana, https://newsghana.
