In response to a surge in deadly attacks across several communities, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has announced a statewide ban on night grazing. The directive was issued during a public address on Wednesday in Jos, following recent incidents of violence that claimed many lives and destroyed property. On April 2, armed assailants launched attacks on Hurti, Josho, Daffo, and other areas within the Manguna district.

A similar assault took place days later in Zike and Kimakpa, communities located in the Kwall District of Bassa’s Iregwe Chiefdom. Both incidents resulted in numerous deaths and extensive property damage. To curb further violence, Governor Mutfwang has also placed restrictions on the movement of cattle.

He declared that transporting cattle by vehicle after 7:00 p.m. is now prohibited throughout the state.

In addition, the use of motorcycles has been restricted between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.

m. daily until further notice. “These measures are aimed at restoring calm and enhancing vigilance across the state,” the governor said.

“Effective Wednesday, April 16, night grazing of cattle is strictly prohibited.” Governor Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property and pledged ongoing support for security agencies. He also emphasized that the attacks should not be seen as isolated clashes between farmers and herders, suggesting deeper underlying issues.

Expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his efforts toward achieving lasting peace in Plateau, Mutfwang announced plans to establish an independent fact-finding committee. The committee will include respected voices tasked with investigating the root causes of the violence and providing actionable recommendations..
