The revised collection schedule for blue and green bins is intended to reduce wear and tear on collection trucks, minimize breakdowns and extend their operational lifespan, the city said in a news release. Citing efficiency, sustainability and saving money, the city has announced that recycling and organic waste collection will become bi-weekly starting in mid-June.

(File) The change also allows for the reallocation of resources to extend evening hours at the Eastview Landfill. Starting June 17, the landfill will remain open until 8 p.m.

Brandon public works director Pam Richardson said the changes reflect the challenges that come with the city’s growth. “The rising demand for the organics program and the ongoing need to support our services have made it clear that we need to adjust,” Richardson said in the release. “These changes are all about improving efficiency, making the best use of our team’s efforts and planning for a sustainable future — all while keeping costs in check.
