Wonder Club, Accra Great Olympics on Monday celebrated its 71st anniversary. In a statement to commemorate the day, the rank and file of the club was urged to work closer to return the club to its glory days as the third force of Ghana football. The statement, issued and signed by the Chairman of the Accra Great Olympics Supporters Union (AGOSU), Mr Joseph Boye, tasked “all the Die-hard members of this great club to put our shoulders behind the wheels, think aloud, for our story to be captured under a better nomenclature in the coming years.
”The statement paid tribute to founding fathers such as Messrs S.O Glover, S.A Okwabi, E.
C Oblietey, Adja Provencal, W.P Tetteh, Amos Josiah and J.K Ameka, who birthed the club at Sakumo Tsonshie in the heart of Ga Mashie on April 21, 1954.
Since its establishment, the club have won honours including the National League on two occasions, the National FA Cup Competitions on three occasions, the defunct Guinness Gala Competition thrice and tasted the glory of the Super Champions title once. The above mentioned achievement, the statement noted, was enough to earn the club the ‘Third Force’ of Ghana Football accolade.“However, the same cannot be said about the club at this juncture.
The Tag has increasingly evaporated into the thin air.“Our performance in the Sub- Continental and continental competition has become very lukewarm, or better still, nothing to write home about.”Moreover, it said “Our best performance in the WAFU (Sub – Continental) competition and the African Club Championship Competition (now Champions League), the Continental Competition, were the penultimate stages in 1983 and 1971, respectively.
”It stated that it was unfortunate that consistently, the club has struggled to stay in the elite league stage with the best run in recent times being the 2020-2024 seasons where it featured in the Premier League without getting relegated.“What makes it more serious is the fact that the club has suffered relegation five times in the last 21 years,” it added.
