In the space of a week, Manchester United academy graduate Harry Amass went from making his first Premier League start to featuring in a Europa League quarter-final decider at Old Trafford. It felt like a long time coming when Harry Amass made his full Premier League debut for Manchester United, after previously impressing former manager Erik ten Hag despite getting no game time under the Dutchman.Ten Hag felt it was too soon for Amass, even though a shortage of left-backs put him in an awkward position before he was sacked at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim eventually gave Amass his United debut, bringing him on for the final 20 minutes of the 3-0 away win against Leicester City in the Premier League last month. His latest appearance came in United’s 5-4 win over Lyon on Thursday night after replacing Patrick Dorgu at left wing-back.To Amass’ credit, the 18-year-old showed that he is capable of playing senior football for United and fans will hope to see him in action more often between now and the end of the season.
Amass also has the speed to hurt teams in the final third, which is not something we had on the left before Dorgu’s injury due to Shaw’s long-term absence.Photo by Jean Catuffe/Getty ImagesHarry Amass gets chance to prove himself at Manchester UnitedAmass can be described as an offensive-oriented full-back/playmaking full-back, which makes him a perfect profile for the modern game, so long has his development doesn’t stagnate. The left-back made a name for himself in the United youth academy and he has been long tipped for a place in the first team.
Full of confidence, Amass has the attributes that make him a perfect wing-back option in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. This is a quick player with quality link-up play as well as the ability to defend against pacey winger.Amass has managed just three appearances for United this season, but with the Premier League season practically over, the head coach has an opportunity to give some of his most talented youngsters extra time and more experience.
It could prove valuable in their development ahead of a busy summer for the club in the transfer market. In his last appearance, Amass witnessed greatness as United pulled off a memorable comeback win over Lyon in the Europa League. It was a game that gave him an experience he will never forget throughout his career.
It ended as a nine-goal thriller and there were two separate occasions when United held the lead – at 2-0 and 5-4 in the 121st minute. United’s comeback came in the final three minutes thanks to three quick-fire goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire. Amass witnessed Old Trafford on one of the magical European nights and, like most players before him, he’ll want another taste of that in the future.
The prospect left-back can achieve great things at United and Thursday night was just an example of that.Harry Amass can benefit from Luke ShawAlthough injuries meant Luke Shaw doesn’t play as regularly as he’d like anymore, the English left-back is a good influence to have around young players like Amass.Amass should try to sponge from Shaw as one of the best left-backs the Premier League has seen over the past 10-years.
One would like to think that if Shaw is unable to play for United weekly, the least he can do is mentor some of our best young players, including Amass.🔥The Atmosphere. The Stadium.
Wow. European Debut. It's Semi's.
