Login Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s declaration that Indigenous welcome to country ceremonies are overdone was one of the cut through moments of Sunday’s leaders’ debate – but perhaps more telling was Anthony Albanese’s failure to challenge him over it. Albanese, by putting the onus onto organisations to decide whether to hold welcome to country ceremonies, effectively offered a tacit concession to a growing number of voters who feel such events and acknowledgement of country statements have become too frequent.
