Friends of a man who died of cancer say he "would be over the moon" after raising thousands in his memory. John McKenna, from Breightmet, died from leukaemia two years ago and friends held a fundraiser earlier this month to mark what would have been his 80th birthday. On Saturday, April 5, they put on a raffle and live music in Hogarths in Churchgate, Bolton, to raise money for The Christie Charity.

They ended up raising £4,000 for the charity, which supports people with cancer. Carol Doherty, 64, from Great Lever , organised the event and said she was "surprised" with how generous people were. She said: "I only wanted to raise about a thousand, so when we got £4,000 – I was buzzing! All the bar staff worked very hard and the landlords did too. "It's a good cause and a lot of people are very generous." Have a story? Get in touch at eoin.
