Heartstopper is ready for its final stop. After three seasons, the coming-of-age series starring Kit Connor and Joe Locke will end with a Netflix movie, the streaming platform announced April 22. The film will be based around the yet-unreleased sixth volume of Alice Oseman 's graphic novels of the same name, which centers around Nick (Connor) and Charlie (Locke) navigating their long-distance relationship after the former heads off to university.
Production on the movie will start this summer, with Still Alice director Wash Westmoreland at the helm and both Connor and Locke serving as executive producers alongside Oseman, Patrick Walters , Iain Canning , Emile Sherman and Euros Lyn , who directed the show's first two seasons. "I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story," Oseman shared in a statement. "I'm so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion.
" She added, "I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion." Ahead of the announcement, Connor shared insight into his thoughts on how long the show could run, explaining to The Cut earlier this month that the Heartstopper family would be hesitant to keep "making it just for the sake of making it." The 21-year-old also pointed to how long he could realistically play a teenager, joking “You don’t want to see Olivia Colman driving a 30-year-old Kit Connor to high school.
” Heartstopper made its debut in 2022, with Connor's Nick character coming to terms with his sexuality. At the time, Connor faced accusations of queerbaiting—a term used to describe people who lean into suspicion that they may be queer in hopes of attracting publicity and attention—leading him to come out publicly . " Since then, several of his castmates came to his defense, including his onscreen mom Colman. "I am so proud of him, but I am not proud of how people bullied him," the Oscar winner told Variety in December 2022. "I think people should be allowed to have their own journey.
