The chairman of the Herkimer County Legislature is incarcerated at the Oneida Correctional Facility after allegedly violating parole and Peter Campione is currently serving as acting chair. Oneida County’s list of inmates presently incarcerated in its correctional facility lists Robert Hollum, incarcerated under two charges, one being violation of probation and the other being seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. On Sunday, May 19, 2024, Hollum, was issued two appearance tickets — one for seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and another for having an open container.

As part of his plea deal, Hollum was sentenced to 30 days of house arrest and three years probation on drug and alcohol conditions. Herkimer County Sheriff Scott Scherer confirmed Hollum's arrest, saying a warrant was put out and his office executed it. However, it would have been a conflict of interest for his office to administer probation, and as such, Hollum was transferred to the Oneida County Sheriff’s custody.

Herkimer County Administrator James Wallace said Herkimer County's rules say that since Hollum is no longer available, Campione is now the acting chairman of the Herkimer County Legislature. The Board's next meeting is 7 p.m.

on Wednesday, May 14. “While on probation in Oneida County, [Hollum] allegedly violated probation and a warrant was put out for his arrest,” Scherer said. “He was arraigned on Friday and was boarded out to Oneida County, because he’s the chairman of the legislators and it would have been a conflict to have him in our jail.

” Scherer said the latter charge listed on Oneida County's website is the original charge that Hollum was charged with almost a year ago and that when someone violates probation, the original charge is added to the order. When asked if he had any other details, Scherer said that he didn’t and all that he knew was that Hollum violated the terms of his probation. “It could be anything, from not showing up to a meeting to not doing a certain test,” the sheriff explained.

Scherer said Hollum would meet with his legal counsel and go before the judge. Wallace said he was not aware of any plans at this time to replace Hollum. This article originally appeared on Observer-Dispatch: Herkimer County chairman in jail for allegedly violating probation.
