A local veteran who died whilst serving in Afghanistan was remembered by family, friends and loved ones at a ceremony in Farnworth. Guardsman David “Jaffa” Atherton, 25, from Manchester, was serving in Afghanistan in 2007 when he was tragically killed during a battle against Taliban fighters near the village of Mirmandab. (Image: Leah Collins) He had just successfully engaged a Taliban position with a Javelin anti-tank missile when he was shot. His brave actions helped to neutralise the enemy threat and enabled his Company to advance safely. Family, servicemen, friends and loved ones gathered at The Market Hotel in Farnworth, owned by one of David's long-time friend and fellow serviceman, Gary Howarth, to remember his sacrifice.

(Image: Leah Collins) David was described my close friends and family as a “good mate that you could trust with your life” and “a guy that can’t be replaced and will always be missed.” Speaking at the service, Regimental Casualty Officer Matthew Ellmer said: “David had a fiancée, Emma and they shared a daughter together, Millie, who are both here today.
“David was 25 years old and had been serving in the army since 2002. His death was a significant event, his memory is honoured by his family and fellow members of the Grenadier Guards. The Market Hotel in Farnworth was decked out in England flags for the ceremony.
(Image: Leah Collins) “David will always be remembered as a brave and dedicated Guardsman who was proud to serve his Queen and Country and his Regiment. “We are grateful to Carl and Gary for their idea of having a Memorial for David at The Market Hotel bar. “A big thank you to Chris and Junior for attending in Uniform today.
Both served and were friends of David.” During the memorial service, a framed Tunic boxed with a photo and citation for David was unveiled to guests. The tunic was made by Pioneer Sgt, Rik Martindale and donated by the Regiment.

(Image: Leah Collins) Matthew added: “The Tunic represents our heritage and Ceremonial part of what the Regiment does alongside the Infantry role and is a fitting memorial. “People who come to this bar can read about a hero called David “Jaffa” Atherton.
” Speaking to The Bolton News David’s fiancée, Emma Ball said: “We feel honoured and proud of the local community, who came to support us celebrate David, me and Millie. I truly can’t thank everyone enough for their kindness.” The service was concluded with an Act of Remembrance to honour David’s memory followed by a minute’s silence. Traditionally, the Act of Remembrance is a way to remember and honour those who have died in service, and to pledge to care for those who are living.
