Prayagraj: Hearing a petition filed by Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman seeking security in view of alleged attack on him by members of Karni Sena , the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday directed the Centre and state govts to file counter affidavits within three weeks. A division bench comprising Justice Rajiv Gupta and Justice Harvir Singh directed to list the matter on May 28, 2025, in top ten cases. Ramji Lal Suman and his son Randhir had moved to court seeking security after the alleged threat to them.
In the petition, the MP had sought impartial probe into the alleged attack on his house in Agra and action against members of Karni Sena. The controversy erupted when Ramji Lal Suman made a statement in Parliament on March 21 suggesting that Rajput warrior king Rana Sanga had invited Mughal emperor Babur to India to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. He further alleged that if Indian Muslims are labelled as Babur's descendants, then by the same logic, other communities could also be seen as descendants of a "traitor" like Rana Sanga.
The remarks provoked an immediate backlash from Rajput organisations, including the Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha and the Karni Sena. Subsequently, members of Karni Sena vandalised his residence in Agra on March 26. Thereafter, Randheer Suman, an ex-MLA, lodged an FIR.
The MP alleged that Karni Sena had demanded his apology and threatened to stage more demonstrations if he doesn't comply. According to the petitioner, he had requested the govt to provide him security and written to President, Vice President and Union Home Minister. However, when no security was provided, he filed the present petition.
His counsel said despite an FIR and representation no action has been taken so far. On behalf of the state govt, it was submitted that security has already been provided to the petitioner. On which the court asked to file counter affidavit in the matter.
