The Gay and Peter Hartley's Hillards Charitable Trust, set up with proceeds from the sale of Hillards Supermarkets to Tesco nearly 30 years ago, is inviting registered charities in the area to apply for the cash grant. Hillards Supermarkets had 43 supermarkets nationwide, including one near Sheep Street in Skipton. The trust was established by Peter Hartley (the grandson of Hillards Supermarkets' founder) alongside his wife, Gay, to support community charities in areas previously served by Hillards Supermarkets.
Sir Norman Bettison, the current chairman of the trust, said: "The generous idea of the Hartley family was to give something back to the communities who had directly supported their stores over the years." The trust has donated more than £2 million since its establishment, supporting charities such as Home Start Craven and SELFA. The trust, which continues to be supported by three generations of the Hartley family, offers entry-level grants of around £1,000 to small, community-based charities, but also creates the opportunity to bid for up to £10,000 if the charity is able to put forward an exceptional case.
