Historic murder cases re-explored in Donal MacIntyre’s true crime TV show

A legendary former Manchester-based investigative reporter is set to return to screens next month for the second season of a hit true crime TV show.

A legendary former investigative reporter is returning to TV screens next month for the second season of a true crime show - with a Bolton case set to feature. BBC Undercover star, Donal MacIntyre’s UK Killer Evidence will premiere on Monday, May 5 at 10pm and continue weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays. Over the span of 10 episodes, criminologist MacIntyre examines key pieces of evidence found at crime scenes that played a pivotal role in solving the cases.

(Image: Substance Global PR) Each episode features a new murder case, analysing the critical scientific breakthroughs, clues, and mistakes that shaped the investigation. The second episode in the season will focus on a case set in Bolton, following the discovery of the naked body of a young woman by two cyclists in November 2001.



The woman was identified as 17-year-old Carly Bateman , a sex worker known to the police. A 40-year-old father of two, Geoffrey Porter, became a person of interest in the case. 17-year-old Carly Bateman.

(Image: Martini Achive) During a trial, Carly's stepbrother Paul Ward told how the teenager had started dabbling with drugs at the age of just 12 and turned to prostitution to fund her habit, living on the streets and at a string of various locations. She suffered from diabetes from the age of four and had to be admitted to hospital several times because of the drugs. When she died, the 5'2 teenager weighed just over six stone, had been living in a hostel for homeless women and was one of more than a dozen young girls selling their bodies for sex.

Porter was arrested for drink driving 45 minutes after Carly was discovered and admitted he had been looking for a prostitute, but was allowed to go. Evidence against Porter saw him jailed for life following a trial at Manchester Crown Court. In the show’s penultimate episode, Donal MacIntyre examines the tragic murder of 62-year-old Stephen Butterworth , who was fatally stabbed in his home in Leigh, on August 25 in 2013, by a desperate drug addict known as "The Meat Man". Mr Butterworth had only recently become a widower, following the sudden death of his wife Mary. He was being treated at Manchester Royal Infirmary where he lost his fight for life .

In a tribute, his family said they were “devastated”, describing him as a “gentle and caring dad, grandad, brother and uncle". (Image: Martini Achive) Neighbours also expressed their sadness at the death of Mr Butterworth who was described as “the most kind-hearted man you could ever meet".

David Dempsey, who was known as "The Meat Man", was sentenced to life in prison following a trial at Liverpool Crown Court. The case highlights the importance of diligent police work , including thorough witness interviews and meticulous forensic analysis, leading to the identification and apprehension of the perpetrator. The series will be streamed on ITVX and Amazon Prime.
