How soon until Jaxson Dart replaces Russell Wilson as Giants’ starting QB?

The Giants drafted Jaxson Dart on Thursday.

Jaxson Dart probably won’t start in Week 1 for the Giants . But he’s the only quarterback on their roster who has any chance of spending a significant number of seasons with them. So how soon until Dart replaces Russell Wilson as the starter? That question will linger for a while, especially if Wilson struggles in 2025, his first season in East Rutherford, against a brutal schedule.

If the Giants sputter yet again, the only hope general manager Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll have of retaining their jobs for 2026 is Dart showing some progress. And he needs to start to do that. For now, what we know is that the Giants made a significant investment in Dart, by drafting him 25th overall Thursday night.

Schoen traded up nine spots and surrendered two third-round picks (including one in 2026) to get Dart. Is he finally their next Eli Manning? We also know, for what it’s worth, that Wilson is atop the Giants’ quarterback depth chart and Jameis Winston is their No. 2 guy — for now.

Both are fading veterans. And the Giants are committed to neither past this season. None of this is to say Dart, at any point in 2025, will be an objectively better option than Wilson or Winston, who have 216 and 87 NFL starts, respectively.

But if the Giants lose a bunch of early games again, they need to spend the later part of the season turning the page to Dart. And they probably will, because at that point, Dart flashing some potential would be this regime’s only chance of sticking around.
