If I'm in an office in Bolton and want to sample food from literally every continent, how would I go about that? The answer is Bolton Market's food hall, and I'm concerned some Boltonions are missing out and haven't sampled any of the food. I think really the hall should be busier, a taste of more or less every continent is available within that room! The curry goat (Image: NQ) Curry goat is one of my favourite dishes to treat myself to - goat is an underrated meat.
And while the dish is typically associated with the Caribbean, it actually originated in the Indian sub-continent, and subsequently spread among the Indian diaspora in the region. The D&X stall in the food hall sells it for £11.95 a serving, which okay isn't as cheap as a Carrs pasty or a Greggs meal deal, but it has so much more flavour.
I, of course, had the dish with rice and peas as is the usual accompaniment (not the green peas you get with fish and chips). After getting back to the office, I tucked in! The finished product (Image: NQ) Goat as meat is similar to lamb, it's quite fatty compared to beef or chicken, especially off the bone. But all that juicy flavour is able to break out from off the bone and diffuse out into the rice.
And that's what you find with D&X's curry goat. It really was great, and another quality is it only took about a minute to be prepared. You get all the convenience of the typical fast food outlets, yet with the freshness and taste of a restaurant.
It's more expensive, yes, but it's cheaper than a meal out and I think in 2025 we forget that everything is expensive now, it's just the way it is. It's a shame in my view that people aren't making the most of the amount of cuisine available in the food hall. Stallholders that are passionate about food from all over the globe are in there, and I can guarantee you'll find a dish in their you've never had before, and you'll love it! You're next go-to dish could lie within the hall's doors.
