EXCLUSIVE: Gardening expert reveals pro tips to transform your lawn into a golf-course-worthy green, from spring scarifying to summer stress-proofing.

Achieving a flawless, golf-course-worthy lawn is all about timing, technique, and the right tools. Landscaping and golf expert John Marshall of Wenningdale Escapes has shared his essential tips exclusively with the Daily Express. Marshall shared his step-by-step guide to getting a perfect lawn this spring and summer, starting with one golden rule.

“Utilising the right tools will help ensure the best quality of cut,” he said. Marshall recommends a cylinder mower as your secret weapon. Unlike standard rotary mowers, cylinder mowers offer a cleaner, more even cut and are adjustable for different grass types and heights.

"It’s not just about aesthetics,” he said. “A good cut promotes long-term grass health.” April is prime time for scarifying, which removes thatch, dead organic matter, and gives your lawn a fresh start.

“It’s like hitting reset,” Marshall explained. “Follow it with a top-up of sand or grass seed to enrich the soil.” When it comes to mowing, consistency beats intensity.

“Cutting little and often is key,” Marshall noted. “But don’t overdo it, grass needs time to recover.” Many homeowners get fertilising wrong.

Marshall warns against uneven application by hand, which can lead to patchy growth or even fertiliser burn. Instead, he suggests using a spreader or water-based fertiliser in a watering can to ensure an even distribution. As temperatures rise, so does the risk of heat stress.

Watch out for wilting, browning, and footprints in the grass. “Water early and late in the day, raise the mowing height, and cut back on mowing frequency,” Marshall advised. A strong nutrient plan, including seaweed treatments, can build resistance to stress and disease.

Marshall emphasises consistent care as the true key to success. “Feed, mow, monitor the weather, and care for the soil, not just the surface. It’s that consistency that leads to a truly stunning lawn.

” When summer ends, don’t drop the ball. Marshall recommends applying an autumn/winter fertiliser, keeping your final mow taller, and regularly raking debris to maintain plant health through the colder months. “It’s all about year-round attention,” he said.

“Get it right now, and your lawn will thank you every season.”.
