1 2 Surat: In summer, the city's water distribution increases, and from March, the per day water supply increased by around 50 Million Litres per Day (MLD). In Feb, the water distribution was low due to low temperatures. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials claim that the water demand increased during summer as the temperature rose.

According to SMC data, in Feb, 42,267 MLD of water was distributed, while in March the distribution was 48,432 MLD. Up to April 27, the distribution was recorded at 42,229 MLD. The average water distribution per day calculated by the SMC hydraulic department was 1,509 MLD in Feb; 1,562 MLD in March; and 1,564 MLD in April.

The demand for water increases every summer largely due to an increase in the quantity of drinking water. "More water is used for drinking, hence the demand. People start bathing a second time in a day during summer," said an SMC official.

Every year, with the growing population, the water demand also increases. Recent estimates suggested that the city's population is above 82 lakh and is growing. Every year, the average demand grows by 60 MLD due to population growth.

"The water demand shoots up at the end of the monsoon and the start of summer. It comes down after a few weeks, but the yearly demand has been growing by 60 MLD every year for the past few years," an official said. Along with the rise in water distribution, complaints of coloured water and worms are also a concern for the citizens.

Recently, the death of one person was reported in Godadara due to a waterborne disease, while around 12 persons fell sick. Investigations by SMC revealed that in a number of areas, groundwater is freely used, and in some cases, it is the source of contamination.
